“I was shocked to discover how much I had been missing. I can hear and understand my daughter much more clearly and was surprised to find that I enjoy music and television more. Going to the movies has become fun again!”
Imagine, a high paced working environment, patients telling you stories, doctors giving you a list of tasks to complete – but you have no idea what they are saying. Not understanding why people are looking at you like they are expecting a response when you didn’t have a clue that they had even asked anything of you. — These are some of the daily struggles Dental Hygienist Crystal Smith used to face before she found the hearing help she needed at Hearing Group.
The problems did not dissipate after leaving the workplace. Crystal describes a different but just as irritating list of hearing frustrations she would encounter even as soon as the car ride home. “Being the driver is fine but being the passenger, not so good.”. This mere change of seating position in the car makes a difference for Crystal because she has a unilateral hearing loss, or hearing loss affecting only one side. For her, the left ear has a significant loss and the right ear functions normally. This is why as a driver (right ear directed toward her passenger) she hears fine, but as the passenger (right ear is facing the window) things are very difficult to hear. This “awareness of location” plays out in every conversation Crystal has with someone. If they are on her left, she struggles, if they are on her right, she hears them well.
At her first appointment, Crystal learned about hearing instruments with CROS technology, where the sound from the worse ear is routed over to the better ear. So in Crystal’s situation, the sounds that she should hear in her left ear are transmitted over to her right ear. Through the HG Test Drive, she was able to try the aids and the CROS system and said “It was amazing! At home, at work, people could tell a difference! I knew what people were talking about instead of just being in my own little world! It has made things easier on everybody.”.
Hearing Group is unique in offering a Subscription Program where we can let people subscribe to our services and use of hearing aids. Crystal is also a part of this new program and says “I love it, it’s just an all around good deal with a small payment plan, which is easy. And when new technology comes available, you can upgrade!”. In addition to these great things Crystal mentions, you also never have to buy batteries, you are always in warranty, all cleaning and programming visits are included and there is NO COMMITMENT! You can go as long as you would like or stop whenever you would like.
Crystal spreads the word about the great hearing help she received at Hearing Group. “I’ve told patients and friends about Hearing Group! There’s no need to wait, get in this program. It’s better living for everybody around you. There’s no reason not to!”
“When I first came in, I had a negative attitude but everyone at Hearing Group was so polite and cheerful that I agreed to the HG trial. They really know what they are talking about. I now have 2 new hearing aids!”
After a successful career, including serving as a Senior Master Sergeant in the Air Force and as an engine mechanic in the Air National Guard, Charley just wanted to enjoy life with his family. With a wife of 67 years and kids with families of their own, Charley had so much life around him to be a part of, but he constantly found himself missing out.
In the line of work Charley was in, loud noise was just part of the job. He purchased his first hearing aids in his 50’s but after numerous adjustments and even trying different hearing aids, he still could not hear well. That company eventually told him there was nothing else they could do. Over time, his family recognized that when they would visit, he would just sit in his chair and go to sleep because he couldn’t hear anything that was going on.
Charley’s wife, Joyce, also struggled with hearing loss. “I didn’t realize this until my sisters began to say “Don’t talk so loud!”.” She had become used to the loud talking, constantly trying to compensate for Charley’s difficulties hearing. At the advice of her sister, Joyce visited Hearing Group. “Irma was so nice and helpful. I thought, what if she could help Charley?”
By this time, Joyce was having to stand right in front of Charley and carefully yell every word. “When you have to do that, you don’t do it any more than you absolutely have to.” Charley, now 90 years old, had also been placed on continuous oxygen. If they left the house, all of his oxygen equipment had to go too, making travel extremely difficult. When Irma heard this, she offered to handle his hearing needs by visiting their home. “The fact that Irma came to our house, that was amazing. What kind of provider does that? You don’t know how much we appreciated it, you just don’t know.”
Irma has worked diligently with each of them, evaluating their loss and lifestyle and getting them in hearing instruments that suit their specific needs. When Joyce talks about Irma, she says “I can count on her as a friend. I can talk to her about anything, confide in her if I need to, it just seems like she’s there for me, especially our hearing problems.”.
Charley and Joyce are so pleased with their hearing help results. “Now Charley and I can talk to each other. Not that we talk a lot, you know, when you’ve been married this long there’s not much left to say!” And when people come to visit, Charley can hear what they are talking about too. “He might not be able to get a word in, but at least he can hear what’s being said!”
Joyce tells everyone about Hearing Group. To those who have hearing loss but haven’t found the hearing help they need, she says “Don’t put it off, it doesn’t get better unless you do something about it!”.
At HG, we are all about going the extra mile to put the client first. Don’t just take our word for it, take the advice of Charley and Joyce!
